Have any Dead Plants?

You gotta stop watering dead plants. -Glennon Doyle

Perfectionism? Dead plant. Busy-ness? Dead plant. Over-committing? Dead plant. Probably like you, I know these all too well. And I learned them as a child. My longing and co-dependency on God started at a very young age. This was partly because I grew up in a highly conservative, religious home and partly because I so longed for someone to love me - even if I couldn't see him or her. The God I was taught about expected zealotry and so I was. 110% devotion. The more I did, the better chance I had at receiving love. I had no idea that love was there all along regardless of how many church groups I led or how perfect I behaved. All of it was a desperate cry to be seen. In my young mind, if I couldn't be acknowledged at home, I would be in my small town. It was pure survival.

Isn't that what we all want? To be seen, to be important, to be needed, to be loved?

Isn't that what perfectionism boils down to? To be noticed, affirmed, praised, our hard work recognized?

But, you know this - it's all bull shit. Our worth does not hang in the balance based on how we perform. Say this with me: I am loved, seen and accepted because I AM.

Behind every destructive behavior is an underlying false belief running the show. Until we acknowledge the false beliefs, we're simply puppets on strings reacting from those beliefs, essentially recreating our pasts and calling it the present.

The control we think we have is an illusion. We're killing our selves over an illusion. Sit with that. Is it worth it? Is it worth wrecking your health, your relationships and not really even being happy all for the illusion of control? As long as fears and false beliefs aren't called out, they call the shots. The moment we feel defensive, unsure or anxious, they jump in the driver's seat. Does this mean we're all screwed? Not at all, Love.

It's time to slow down. It's time to release the "shoulds" and reclaim your power. It's time to get quiet and tune in. Go on a hunt for your true self. This might mean you cancel commitments or even events you're hosting. Oh well! Maybe it's time to get into nature, take up yoga, get a massage, do some solo travel (post-Corona), whatever your body is craving. It's time to stop pouring from an empty cup. Don't you want to know what it's like to live with a full well that never runs dry? Would you rather operate from scarcity or abundance?

If you've ever wondered if there is more, there is. There is another side and you have the power to welcome it or keep running. Your life doesn't have to be a constant struggle! We are light-filled beings that originate from Love. The anxiety, unease, frantic-ness, misery and self-hate are not our true selves. So, tell me, Darling, "What will you do with your one wild and precious life? -Mary Oliver
